Ai no eien (Eternity of love)
by Shad'ai

Miles "Tails" Prower gave the bolt one final twist, before dropping his spanner to the ground.

"Finally... it's done. The perfect gift for Sonic. He'll love this."

The young kitsune smiled shyly. He'd been Sonic's best friend since the beginning, but recently, he felt something more. Much more.

'I love him. Sonic... my best friend.'

Tails blushed deeply, deciding to wash himself off. After all, he had been working hard.

"Hmmmm... shower time... then I'll go and surprise him."

The kitsune walked into the bathroom. Taking off his shoes, socks and gloves, he stepped into the shower, turning on the water. A sigh escaped his lips as the water came into contact with his fur.

"Sonic..."

The young fox closed his eyes, placing his face under the streaming water, streaks running down his face.

'I wonder what you're thinking of now, Sonic. I'm always thinking of you.'

At that moment, Sonic the Hedgehog was just finished with his daily run. Having arrived back at his house, Sonic was panting heavily, having pushed himself to run further and faster than usual, and now his body was punishing him for it.

"Whew... I can't believe... *pant* I ran... *pant* so hard..."

The blue hedgehog walked into his house, and headed into the bathroom, where he took off his shoes, socks and gloves. He then looked at himself in the mirror.

"I look a little different... I feel a bit different too..."

Suddenly, Sonic's reflection was replaced with an image of Tails. Sonic blushed deeply and blinked. The image was gone, and Sonic was gazing at his own reflection again.

"These visions are getting more and more frequent. I'm always seeing Tails in them."

The hedgehog entered the shower, turning on the water. Giving a soft sigh as the water touched his body, Sonic returned his thoughts to his best friend.

'I know what it means, but it scares me. He's been my best friend for what feels like forever. He sees me as his big brother. I can't tell him that I love him. It'll scare him away.'

Closing his eyes, Sonic washed his quills.

'Tails...'

The blue hedgehog finished his shower, turning off the water and grabbing a towel to dry himself off. Wrapping the towel around him, Sonic grabbed his attire and walked into his bedroom. Opening his closet, he grabbed a new pair of socks and gloves. He put them on, followed by his shoes, and threw the towel into the basket he kept.

"Maybe I should give him a call... let him know that I'm gonna be going away. I'll just stay with Eggman."

Sonic sighed softly, remembering the day that Eggman finally gave up trying to rule the world. The two rivals had become fast friends after Sonic was forced to nurse Eggman back to health, due to the both of them being in a terrible explosion. Returning to the present, Sonic's eyes fell on the picture of him and Tails that sat next to the phone. Giving another soft sigh, Sonic picked up the receiver and dialled Tails' number.

-----

Tails had just finished his own shower, and had redressed. He walked over to the phone and gave a soft sigh. He noticed the picture of him and Sonic that was placed next to the phone. A shy blush came over his face, remembering the day the picture had been taken. They had both been enjoying each other's company. Tails had clinged onto Sonic and gazed up into his eyes.

"Sonic, we'll always be the best of friends, won't we?"

Tears came into Tails' eyes as he remembered the reply his best friend had given him.

"We certainly will, Tails. Forever and always!"

The young kitsune had nuzzled gently against Sonic. His vision faded and the kitsune was standing alone in his house. Drying his tears, his eyes locked on the phone.

"I better call him and let him know that I'll be coming over."

Picking up the receiver, he dialled Sonic's number and waited. His ears drooped as he heard the busy tone.

"I guess he's trying to get Amy off the phone or something. That'll take some time."

Tails hung up the receiver and sat down on a chair. Suddenly, his eyes lit up.

"I know! I'll go surprise him by just turning up..."

Tails ran into his workshop and grabbed the gift he had made for Sonic, placing it under his arm, before running out of his workshop and locking up.

'I hope you like your present, Sonic...'

The kitsune headed for Sonic's house.

-----

Sonic listened carefully, before giving a soft sigh of disappointment as he heard the busy tone.

"Maybe he's left the phone off the hook while working on something."

The hedgehog closed his eyes, remembering the first time he and his best friend had met.

"Hey, little guy. What's your name?"

The young kitsune had looked up at him with innocent eyes.

"I-I'm Miles... Miles Prower."

Sonic had given Tails a wide grin.

"Is that your name, huh? It sounds like Miles per Hour. That's kinda funny."

Tails' face drooped.

"You're like everyone else. Making fun of my name."

Sonic frowned, and placed his hand on the young kitsune's shoulder.

"No. What I meant was that I like your name. It sounds like a cool name. My name is Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog."

The kitsune smiled slightly.

"Really? You like my name? Well, I like being called Tails, because I have two tails. I like it a lot better than Miles."

The blue hedgehog had smiled back.

"If you want, I'll call you Tails. Also, I'll be your friend if you like."

Tails' eyes had lit up.

"Really? You'll be my friend? Could you help me look for my mom and dad?"

Sonic gave his trademark grin and nodded.

"Of course. Let's go find them, Tails."

The blue hedgehog took the young kitsune's hand and the two had went off on their journey to find Tails' parents. The flashback ended, and Sonic was left by himself.

"Tails... I want to be so much more than just friends..."

Sonic's ears perked up as he heard a noise coming from outside. Curious, he walked out to investigate. Looking around, he saw nothing. Suddenly, he jumped to the ground as an energy beam zipped past him. The beam smashed into the side of his house, wiping out that part of it, and starting a fire. Sonic jumped to his feet.

"Who did this?"

Gasping, the blue hedgehog looked up and noticed a gigantic mecha.

"What the?! This isn't one of Eggman's mechas. Besides, Eggman and I are friends... so why would he...?"

The mecha snickered at Sonic's confusion.

"I am RX0-1a, created some months ago to destroy you. Metal Sonic created me to destroy you, since he was too damaged to do so himself. Now, I shall annihilate you."

Sonic gritted his teeth, an image of Tails flashing into his mind.

'Tails...'

-----

The young kitsune flew as fast as he could to Sonic's house. At that moment, he smelt trouble. Actually, he smelt smoke, and it was coming from Sonic's house. Tails approached quickly, noticing a giant mecha, its energy cannon aimed directly at Sonic.

"SONIKKU!"

Tails' loud scream caused both Sonic and RX0-1a to turn and face the kitsune, who ran to Sonic's side, gift still tucked under his arm. Giving a haunting smile, Tails presented Sonic with his gift.

"Tails?"

The kitsune shyed his eyes away and blushed.

"I made it for you, Sonic."

The hedgehog blushed back, taking his gift, a new pair of shoes, in the same design as Shadow's airskates. Sonic threw his arms around his best friend's body, closing his eyes. RX0-1a took this moment as his chance for attack. Powering up his energy cannon, he prepared to fire at the two friends. Sonic's eyes shot open, and he pushed Tails to the side.

"Get out of here, Tails!"

The kitsune's eyes widened and he shook his head.

"NO!"

Tails ran over to his best friend, throwing his arms around him.

"I won't leave you, Sonic."

RX0-1a fired his energy cannon at the two friends.

"Tails..."

The energy beam formed and moved towards them.

"Sonic... I love you."

Sonic's eyes widened, locking onto his best friend's, the energy beam drawing closer.

"Tails... I-I love you too."

The two friends closed their eyes as their lips met, for their first and final kiss. The energy beam struck them at the same time, obliterating the new lovers from existance. Their final whispered words echoed on the winds.

"Our friendship will last forever... but our love will last beyond eternity..."
